Hey team,
Last week was a bit of a quieter one, which is pretty normal for the end of January — and the weather definitely didn’t help. That said, it was still good to see people showing up and putting the work in. Consistency through the quieter weeks is what sets the tone for what comes next.
New Site Update — February Kick-Off
We’re now officially into February, and this month is full steam ahead with the refurbishment of our new home in the Ravenswood Collective.
Here’s the current rough timeline:
End of February: We aim to move all training operations to the new site. At this stage, the space will be functional but not fully finished — we won’t have changing rooms ready yet, but we will have:
Toilets
A roof over our heads
Mats down
(Which, realistically, is very similar to what we’re working with now.)
March: You’ll all get to be part of the process as the space continues to evolve. You’ll see changes day to day and week to week as the refurbishment progresses.
End of March / Beginning of April: Target window for our grand opening, with the full build completed.
As with all building work, timelines can shift slightly, but I’ll keep you as up to date as possible on what’s been done and how things are progressing. Transparency is important, and you’ll be brought along for the journey.
As soon as we’re training in the new space at the end of February, we’ll also be launching our new, expanded timetable, with more classes straight away — and we’ll continue adding to it as the membership grows.
This really feels like a big step forward for E17 BJJ, and I’m incredibly excited about what this next chapter brings.

This Week’s Focus
Gi Fundamentals — with Mouncif & Juan: This week we’ll be exploring side control — how to get there safely, maintain strong control, and use the position to either improve your dominance or work towards a finish. We’ll focus on pressure, positioning, and denying your partner space, so side control becomes a place where you can slow things down and take control of the round.
No-Gi Fundamentals — with Chris: We’re continuing from last week, focusing on underhooks and why winning that battle is so important. We’ll look at how underhooks affect balance, posture, and movement, and how securing them opens up escapes, sweeps, and attacking opportunities.
Judo Fundamentals — with Justin: This week’s Judo technique is Hara Goshi, a powerful hip throw that relies on timing, positioning, and correct hip placement rather than strength. We’ll focus on breaking balance, entering cleanly, and understanding how the throw works so it can be applied smoothly — especially in a BJJ context.
Wrestling for BJJ — with Mehmet: This week we’ll be working on wrestle-ups from guard and wrestling from your knees — learning how to come up safely, build pressure, and turn scrambles into top position. Really practical skills that show up constantly in live rounds.
Teens No-Gi - Teens will continue working on double-leg takedowns, focusing on good level changes and safe finishes. We’ll also explore the armbar from back mount when your partner defends the rear naked choke, helping them understand how attacks connect and flow together.
Questions About the New Site?
If you’ve got any questions about the new venue, the timeline, or the upcoming timetable changes, please just ask. I’m always happy to chat before or after class and keep everyone in the loop.
Tip of the Week- “Pin first, submit later"
Strong positions win rounds. If you can slow someone down, control their movement, and make them uncomfortable underneath you, the submission opportunities tend to appear on their own. Prioritise control and let the finish come naturally.
Looking forward to another steady week on the mats and continuing to move things forward together.
Thanks, as always, for being part of E17 BJJ.
See you soon,
— Mouncif,
E17 BJJ
