Hey team,
The weather hasn’t exactly been on our side this week — Monday was busy, but things quietened down a bit after that. Still, it was great to see people pushing through and getting sessions in despite the rain and cold. That kind of consistency always pays off.
Just a quick note as well: I’m away today and tomorrow.
Today’s classes will be taken by Juan and Richard
Tomorrow, Chris will be running the session
Big thanks to the team for stepping in and keeping things running smoothly.
Big News – E17 BJJ Has Found a Home
I’m really happy (and honestly relieved) to finally be able to share this:
E17 BJJ has secured its own venue.
After a long time searching for the right place, we’ve signed a lease on a property in the Ravenswood Collective Industrial Estate, just a few minutes away from St Mary’s Welcome Centre.

Right now, the space is very much a blank canvas, but refurbishment works will begin immediately. If all goes to plan, we’re aiming to start moving classes over towards the end of February, with full refurbishment completed by the end of March.
This is a huge milestone for us. Thank you for your patience, encouragement, and belief in what we’re building — E17 BJJ genuinely exists because of the people in it.
Having our own venue means we’ll be able to:
Pack out the evening timetable properly
Add more weekend training options
Continue expanding the schedule as the membership grows
And importantly, have proper changing facilities and showers, making training before or after work much easier
No more packing up and and putting out mats
I’m incredibly excited about what this new chapter will bring.
This Week’s Focus
Gi Fundamentals With Mouncif & Juan: This week we’re heading back to guard passing, focusing on the leg weave pass. It’s a great alternative to the knee slice and works particularly well when your opponent is blocking or turning away. We’ll look at how to threaten one side and then switch directions with the leg weave to keep your passing flowing and controlled.
No-Gi Fundamentals with Chris: In No-Gi we’ll be working from bottom half guard, focusing on how to secure and use the underhook. We’ll look at creating angles, coming up on your side, and using the underhook to either recover guard, sweep, or build up to better positions. A really important concept for surviving and progressing from underneath.
Judo with Justin: We’ll be repeating last week’s focus on Seoi Otoshi, revisiting the key details around off-balancing, positioning, and timing. A good opportunity to refine the movement and get more comfortable with the mechanics.
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet: This week is about putting it all together — combining stance, movement, and hand fighting on the outside, then linking that into practical wrestling finishes. The focus is on clean set-ups and understanding when to commit.
Tip of the Week - At first it feels like learning individual words, later it becomes a conversation.
When you’re new to a technique or position, it can feel strange and disconnected, like it doesn’t belong anywhere. That’s normal. Over time, as you learn more positions and movements, those isolated pieces start linking together and the bigger picture begins to make sense. Keep going — fluency comes with repetition.
Thanks again for being part of this journey — genuinely. There’s a lot to look forward to, and I can’t wait to bring you along for what’s coming next.
See you on the mats,
— Mouncif,
E17 BJJ
