Hey team,
The Saturday was a lot of fun this weekend, it turned into a massive event that went on well into the night, and it was great to see such a good turnout for the open mat during the day too. Always nice when the gym and the wider community cross paths like that.
Unit 2 (the main room) should also start looking a lot more finished over the next few days as more of the work gets completed. Things are starting to come together and it’s exciting seeing the space evolve week by week.

A Few Changes Coming
Over the next few weeks there will be a number of small tweaks to the timetable as well as some new class additions and a few new instructors joining the team.
We’ll also be starting to test a new E17 BJJ app this week, which you’ll hear a lot more about very soon. This will help with class scheduling, updates and communication as the gym continues to grow.
Schedule Changes From This Week
Class Length
All weekday classes will now run for 75 minutes. This gives us more time to explore concepts and techniques properly, and also allows for more situational and normal sparring time.
Gi Classes (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
These will now begin at 18:15 and end at 19:30. The idea is to give everyone a bit more time after work to make it to class comfortably.
Judo Classes
These will now start at 19:30 instead of 19:15 and run until 20:45
You can always check the latest full timetable on the website:www.e17bjj.co.uk
Coaching Updates
Ryan Nee will also be joining us to teach the No Gi classes on Tuesday and Thursday this week.
And as mentioned earlier, there will be a few more additions over the coming weeks as we continue building and expanding the coaching team.
This Week’s Focus
Gi Fundamentals with Mouncif - We’ll continue working on mount escapes, building on what was covered last week. The focus will be on understanding how to stay safe under pressure, protecting your arms and neck, and creating space to recover guard or return to a neutral position.
Judo with Justin - This week we’ll be looking at Ashi Barai. These sweeping techniques focus on timing and footwork rather than strength, catching your opponent as they step and removing their base at the right moment. They’re a great way to develop balance awareness and can translate nicely into grappling situations.
No Gi with Ryan - You’ll continue looking at open guard passing, focusing on how to control the legs, manage distance and avoid getting entangled in guards before committing forward.
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet - This week you’ll be looking at high crotch finishes, including the dump finish and transitioning into the single leg. The focus will be on controlling the position once you enter the legs, understanding where your head and hips should be, and learning how to convert the entry into a clean takedown rather than getting stuck underneath.
Tip of the Week
Ask yourself: what is my partner trying to do?
It’s easy to get caught up thinking about your own move, your own technique, or your next attack. But often the biggest improvements in Jiu Jitsu come when you start paying attention to what your partner is trying to achieve.
Are they trying to recover guard? Stand up? Get an underhook? Break your posture?
Once you understand their goal, it becomes much easier to shut it down before it happens.
Good Jiu Jitsu isn’t just about doing things well, it’s about stopping the other person from doing what they want to do.
See you on the mats,
Oss!
