Hey team,
Another good step forward this week at the gym. Things are really starting to come together and the space is beginning to feel like a proper home for E17 BJJ.
Unit 2’s mats are now fully down and the space is looking awesome. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, I’m really looking forward to you stepping into the room and seeing how it’s all come together.

This week our back-lit sign for the front of the unit is also being delivered, which should really start to make the place pop from the outside. Hopefully we’ll see that going up on Wednesday.
Let’s Pack the Mats
This Wednesday we’ll have a photographer and camera crew in the new unit capturing footage and photos for the gym.
It would be great to get as many people on the mats as possible to help make the room look full and lively for the footage. If you can make it down, please do. Let’s pack the place out and show off the energy in the room.
Schedule Updates
From Thursday this week, Hugo will be taking the Tuesday and Thursday No Gi classes.
Ryan is away competing but will be back soon and will be assisting with these sessions again afterwards.
Monday and Wednesday 18:15 class will remain our Gi Fundamentals sessions, and the fundamentals curriculum will now run two weeks at a time. This means you’ll have two Mondays and two Wednesdays to really explore a position or concept before we move on.
Friday 18:15 classes will be mixed Gi sessions, where we can explore a wider range of techniques and ideas while still keeping them accessible to everyone, of course followed by our open mat for everyone, Gi, No Gi or Judo
This Week’s Focus
Gi Fundamentals with Mouncif: Over the last couple of weeks we’ve looked at back escapes and mount escapes, and now we move onto escaping side control. We’ll focus on protecting your frames, creating space and working your way back to guard or a safer position.
Gi Mixed (Friday): We will be continuing to look at the overhook from closed guard and how we can use it as a control position but also offensively with a number of attacks.
No Gi Fundamentals: This week you’ll be looking at Reverse De La Riva, exploring how this guard can be used to control distance, off-balance your partner and begin setting up sweeps or transitions into other guards. The focus will be on understanding the hooks, controlling the legs and using the position to manage pressure from the top player rather than letting them settle into a pass.
Judo with Justin: This week the focus will be Uke Goshi. We’ll look at how to use your hips and grips to load your partner onto your hip before rotating and bringing them over. The emphasis will be on correct positioning, balance breaking and using your body properly rather than trying to force the throw.
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet: You’ll continue working with collar ties, looking at how to deal with stalled positions and how to start developing offensive opportunities from the tie. We’ll focus on controlling posture, creating angles and turning the collar tie into attacks rather than just a neutral position.
Teens no GI with Mouncif and Juan: We will recap out mount escapes and move onto how we can escape side control to finish our system of escapes
Tip of the Week - Find the problem, not the move.
If something isn’t working, don’t just switch techniques randomly. Ask yourself what the actual problem is.
Is it posture?
Is it grip control?
Is it balance?
When you solve the real problem, the technique usually starts working properly.
See you on the mats!
