Closed Guard Chronicles: Part 227/05/2025 E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter

Hi team, hope you have all enjoyed the long bank holiday weekend and are well rested and ready to get back to training!

This Week's Techniques -

Fundamentals - We're continuing our focus on the Closed Guard position, working on getting out (on top), and making the most of being in the position (on bottom). By the end of the week you should have some more options to attack with from your guard, making you even more dangerous!

Fundamentals Plus - We are going to also be going through Closed Guard, with a focus on combination attacks and alternate set ups to create an even more dangerous attacking system, adding layers to our submission series, to keep your opponents guessing.

Busy Wednesday class last week!

Return Of The Open Day - This Friday 30/05

This Friday see's our second ever Open Day, with members of Stratford Judo club, and other nearby clubs/ Unis joining us for an evening of fun.

We will start with some Judo taught by Sensei Justin, followed by some BJJ taught by me, sparring and then some open time to roll, ask questions, drill or make friends.

Coming Soon

During the week commencing 9th of June, we'll be hosting a guest coach for all sessions! Don't miss it - it'll be a great opportunity to learn new perspectives and sharpen your game. I will still be here for the week also!

Tip Of The Week - The Best Way Out Of Closed Guard Is To Stand Up!

As its says above, the best way out is up, and do it early! The longer you stay in someone's Closed Guard, the more options they have to sweep or submit you. Posture up, control the grips, keep you hands on your partner and look to stand up with purpose before your opponent gets to work. Breaking the guard early shifts the momentum back to you.

As always, if you have any questions or want to review anything, grab me before or after class.

See you on the mats!
