E17 BJJ Turns One! | E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter 05/01/26

Hey team,

This week marks a huge milestone for us — E17 BJJ turns 1 year old on the 8th of January.

Looking back, it’s genuinely amazing to see how far we’ve come in such a short time. We started last year with 5 people on the mats and just 2 classes a week, and now we’re running 10 classes weekly, with our Gi fundamentals often seeing 20+ people on the mats.

What’s been even better than the numbers is the community that’s grown around it — supportive, welcoming, and consistent.

Thank you to everyone who’s trained, supported, helped set up mats, cleaned up, or simply shown up — E17 BJJ exists because of the people in it.

Looking ahead, 2026 is going to be a big year for E17 BJJ. By the end of January / early February we’ll be launching even more classes, giving you more chances to train, improve, and enjoy your time on the mats.

If you know anyone — friends, family, colleagues — who could benefit from what Jiu Jitsu offers (confidence, fitness, community, mental reset, or just trying something new), send me a message and we’ll get them booked in for a free trial. There’s no better time to start than the beginning of a new year.

This Week’s Focus

Gi — Guard Passing (Knee Slice Focus)

This week we’ll be working on guard passing, with an emphasis on winning the inside space and using it to set up the knee slice. We’ll look at posture, grip placement, and controlling your partner’s hips to make the pass reliable rather than forced.

No-Gi — Closed Guard Attacks

In No-Gi we’ll be exploring attacking from closed guard, focusing on fundamental movements like the shoulder crunch, hip bump sweep, and how to chain these together to create reactions. A great reminder that closed guard is still a powerful attacking position when used with good posture breaking and timing.

Judo — Ko Soto Gari

This week’s Judo focus is Ko Soto Gari, a simple and effective foot sweep. We’ll look at timing the step, pulling your partner’s weight onto the back foot, and using clean movement rather than strength to finish the throw — perfect for transitioning straight into top control for BJJ.

Wrestling for No-Gi - We’ll continue developing our leg entries for takedowns, this time focusing on hand fighting — how to clear ties, create reactions, and open up clean opportunities to attack the legs.

New year, new me!

January is always a busy period, and if you’ve got a moment (and haven’t already), I’d really appreciate you leaving us a Google review. It makes a huge difference in helping E17 BJJ grow, which in turn allows us to offer more classes, more training times, and more opportunities for everyone here.

Merch Available

We’ve got E17 BJJ jumpers and rashguards available on site:

  • Jumpers — £30 (very warm, perfect for this time of year)

  • Rashguards — £32 (great quality and ideal for No-Gi or under the Gi)

Just grab me before or after class if you’d like one.

Tip of the Week - Build momentum, don’t wait for motivation.

You won’t always feel motivated, especially at the start of the year. Show up anyway. Momentum is built through action, not inspiration, and once it starts rolling, everything gets easier.

Thanks again for being part of E17 BJJ — excited for what we’re building together in 2026.

See you on the mats!

— Mouncif,

E17 BJJ
