Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a great weekend and are ready for another solid week of training!
Christopher Newman joins for No Gi from this week!
Chris will be joining us from this week, which means you’ll start seeing both of us on the mats in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
This is a really exciting step for E17 BJJ — the more members we have, the more we can grow together: adding classes, bringing in instructors, and building even more value for everyone in the team.
This Week’s Classes
Gi Fundamentals – We’re continuing our journey through the half guard. This time, we’ll flip perspectives and focus on passing from the top. Expect to learn different strategies for working around (or directly through) the knee shield and how to consolidate strong passing positions.
No-Gi Fundamentals w/ Chris – We’ll be focusing on open guard. From a seated position, we’ll track our partners’ movements to enter shin-on-shin guard and explore arm drag attacks as an entry point into sweeps and back takes.
Open Classes – As always, this is your time to spar, drill, and ask questions. A perfect chance to sharpen your favourite techniques or troubleshoot positions you’re struggling with.
Tip of the Week
Half guard is one of the deepest and most versatile positions in Jiu Jitsu. The battle often comes down to posture and control. If you’re on top, aim to flatten your opponent, control their head, and work chest-to-chest to shut down their attacks.
If you’re on bottom, your priority is the opposite — stay on your side, build frames, and use your knee shield or underhook to create movement. Remember: the same position can feel very different depending on who is winning the battle for angle and control.
Mindset of the Week
Progress in Jiu Jitsu rarely happens in big leaps — it’s more like a series of small steps that eventually add up. You might not notice how much better your guard is from one week to the next, but give it three months and the difference becomes clear. Stay consistent, focus on the little wins each session, and trust the process. The results will come.
See you on the mats!
