No Gi, No Problem — New Classes Start This Week! - E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter 25/08/2025

Hi everyone,

Hope you’re all enjoying the Bank Holiday weekend! Just a reminder there are no classes today — but don’t worry, we’re back tomorrow with an exciting new schedule!

New Classes Starting This Week!

That’s right, No Gi is officially here at E17 BJJ! Starting this week, we’ll be running:

Tuesday & Thursday: 18:30–19:30

Saturday: 10:00–11:00

These will be running in the The Gallery, Crate17 (the private room in the food court upstairs in the Mall!)

That brings us up to 8 classes a week over 6 days week!

Note: Tuesday’s class is dependent on our new mats arriving on time — fingers crossed they land before then!

What to Wear for No Gi

No Gi is simple:

T-shirt or rashguard on top

Shorts, gi bottoms, leggings, spats, or jogging bottoms on the bottom

No zips or buttons (they can cause injuries)

And don’t forget — keep those nails trimmed! It’s important for all BJJ, but especially in No Gi where scratches happen more easily.

This Week’s Classes

Gi Fundamentals - We’ll continue focusing on staying safe from submissions while working toward mount escapes, building on what we covered last week.

No Gi Fundamentals - We’ll explore the arm drag from standing and then look at mount attacks, keeping the connection with the recent Gi lessons.

Open Classes - Come and practice whatever you like, ask questions and spar as always!

Tip of the Week - Open Palms!

In No Gi, there are no lapels or sleeves to hold onto. Instead, think about using C-cup grips (curving your hand like a hook) and strong open-handed frames. Not only does this help you control your partner without relying on cloth, but it also sharpens your grip awareness for Gi training — making your hands more versatile in both styles.

Thank you all so much for your continued support, YOU are all the reason we are able to put these new classes on. With your help, we will continue to grow and provide more options and even better value money for you all!

I'm proud to have the opportunity to teach such an amazing group of people.

See you on the mats!
