Putting It All Together - E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter 01/09/2025

Hi everyone,

Hope you all had a great weekend!

It was fantastic to see so many of you at our brand-new No-Gi sessions at Crate17. The energy was brilliant, and it’s exciting to see these classes starting to grow — we can’t wait to build them into a regular part of the schedule.

Our new no gi classes!
Our new no gi classes!

This Week’s Classes

Gi Fundamentals - This week, we’re going to focus on putting it all together. We’ll work on how to structure a full BJJ round — starting from standing, deciding your objectives, and applying the skills you’ve been learning over the past few months in a connected way.

No-Gi Fundamentals - We’ll build on last week’s work with inside ties to the rear body lock to work some stand up at the beginning of class, then we will transition into closed guard attacks for the main portion of the session.

Open Classes - As always, open classes are your time to drill, ask questions, and spar. A quick note: these classes will now run until 8:00pm (instead of 8:30pm).

Help the Academy Grow

The more our community expands, the more classes and opportunities we can offer you. If you know someone who might enjoy BJJ — whether they’re looking for fitness, self-defense, or just a new challenge — invite them along for a free trial session. A personal recommendation is the best way to help new people take that first step onto the mats.

Tip of the Week

For beginners, sparring full rounds can feel overwhelming. Instead of trying to “win” every exchange, focus on having a clear goal. Maybe it’s hitting the sweep you drilled last week, or just working on maintaining guard. It’s better to attempt techniques you know — even if they fail — than to scramble with no direction. Over time, these small, intentional steps will build your game.

Next Social — Save the Date!

Friday 12th, after open class at 8pm

We’ll head out for dinner and drinks (optional, of course). These socials are a relaxed way to connect with teammates off the mats, make new friends, and share a few laughs. We’d love to see as many of you there as possible!

Mindset for the Week

Think of your training as building a map. At first, you only see a few scattered landmarks — a sweep here, a submission there. With time and consistency, the connections between them become clearer, and you begin to see the whole landscape. Don’t rush the process — just keep showing up and adding pieces to the puzzle.

See you on the mats!
