Hey team,
The weather has been pretty terrible this week, but hopefully things are starting to improve soon. Fortunately, the weather is always good on the mats at E17 BJJ. Good people, good training and a sunny environment regardless of what's happening outside.
A huge congratulations also goes to Ryan, who is back this week from the States after competing at the IBJJF World Championships, the biggest competition of the year. Ryan took 3rd place in the Adult Division in dominant fashion and represented himself, the gym and his team brilliantly.
If you get the chance, it's worth watching some of his matches. They were incredibly entertaining and there are plenty of lessons to be learned from seeing high-level competitors put their game into action.
Schedule Changes
There will be no late Wednesday class this week.
Unfortunately, Justin has had to step away from coaching due to personal reasons. This is a real shame as he's been an excellent coach and a great addition to the gym.
This does leave us with a gap in the timetable on Wednesday evenings. At the moment we're considering carefully what should take its place. It's not quite as simple as finding another Judo coach and carrying on as normal.
For now, the mats will remain available during that time slot for anyone who wishes to:
Practice stand-up
Drill
Spar
Work through techniques together
Help each other improve
Watch this space. We have some exciting ideas for what could fill that slot in the future.
Ryan is also back to leading the teen classes this week and assisting Hugo in the adult No Gi classes afterwards.
Summer Grading
A reminder that our Summer Grading is on the 20th of June and will start at 12:30!
This time of year is always interesting because consistency can become more difficult. Holidays start appearing, the weather improves, weekends get busier and routines can become disrupted.
The people who make the biggest jumps in their Jiu Jitsu over the summer are usually not the ones doing anything spectacular. They're the ones who keep showing up.
Even one or two sessions a week maintained consistently over the summer can make a huge difference by the time we get to autumn.
Keep training, keep collecting reps, and you'll be surprised how much progress you've made by grading day.
This Week's Focus
Gi Fundamentals with Juan (Monday & Wednesday)
Juan will be finishing off his half guard series this week. It's a position he has spent a huge amount of time studying and developing, and there is still plenty more to learn from it.
Expect lots of details on control, positioning and how to turn half guard into a genuinely dangerous attacking position.
No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)
This week you'll be looking at outside passing.
The first session will focus on staying safely on the outside and working variations of the J-Point pass.
The second session will continue through into north-south sequences, helping you build connections once the guard has been passed.
Gi Fundamentals with Hugo (Tuesday & Thursday)
These sessions will focus on using the trousers to pass from the outside. Expect Torreandos, Long Steps, Cross Pant Passes and plenty of details on controlling the legs before committing forward.
Teens with Ryan & Hugo
The teens will continue looking at guard passing and will build further on using north-south as a dominant control position before transitioning into submissions.
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet
This week you'll be working with underhooks, exploring different entries and attacks from the position as you continue expanding your wrestling repertoire.
Hero HQ & Combat HQ
It's grading week!
The kids will be revisiting key positions, concepts and techniques they've worked on over the last few months as they prepare to show what they've learned to earn their stripe and new belts!
New Merch Drop
We've had a fresh batch of E17 BJJ merch arrive and it's just in time for summer.

We've now got:
New white E17 BJJ t-shirts
Black E17 BJJ t-shirts
Sapphire E17 BJJ t-shirts
Indigo E17 BJJ t-shirts
All t-shirts are £20 and available directly from the gym.
If you've been meaning to grab some E17 gear, now's a great time. The white tees in particular are perfect for the warmer weather and look great both on and off the mats.
Speak to me, Richard, or one of the coaches if you'd like to have a look at the available sizes.
Tip of the Week
Stay Curious
Some of the biggest breakthroughs in Jiu Jitsu come from asking simple questions.
Why did that sweep work?
Why couldn't I pass?
Why did they keep escaping?
The people who improve the fastest aren't always the most athletic or naturally talented. They're often the most curious.
Every roll gives you information if you're willing to look for it. Instead of being frustrated when something doesn't work, try to see it as feedback. Your training partner has just shown you something you can improve.
Ask questions. Experiment. Be willing to make mistakes.
Curiosity turns every round into an opportunity to learn, and over time those small lessons add up to big improvements.
See you on the mats!
