Hey team,
Lots of exciting things coming up at the moment, and the build is finally starting to head into its last stages. Every week the space feels more complete, more alive, and more like the vision we had for it when this all started. Really exciting times for the gym.
Grand Opening
Our official Grand Opening is getting very close now and we want to make it a huge day for the gym.
Saturday 30th May
From 12:30pm
We’ll have:
Open mats
Food available
Coffee available
Photos and filming throughout the day
Ribbon cutting
Great vibes all day long
There will also be the option for people to head over to the local breweries afterwards if they’d like to continue the celebrations.
I’m working hard behind the scenes at the moment to make this event as good as possible and really bring the place to life properly.
Whether you’re an E17 member, train at another gym, or just want to come down and enjoy a good atmosphere and see what we’ve built, you’re welcome to join us.
We want to absolutely pack the mats out for this one, so invite your friends, invite your family, and let’s make it a day to remember. I believe we have a great gym, filled with great people and we have so much more we can put on still - we just need people to know we are here!

This Week’s Focus
BJJ Gi Fundamentals Monday & Wednesday with Mouncif (Hugo on Wednesday) & Juan: We’ll continue working from collar sleeve guard, focusing on defensive frames and how we can retain our guard when our partner does a good job of disconnecting our feet. We’ll explore inside and outside pummelling and how to become sticky, difficult to pass, and constantly connected to your partner.
BJJ Gi Fundamentals Tuesday & Thursday with Hugo: You’ll continue looking at De La Riva (DLR), a strong attacking position with lots of sweeping, back taking and transition opportunities. The focus will be on linking movements together rather than treating techniques as isolated attacks.
No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo and Juan: We’ll begin looking at front headlock attacks, introducing guillotine variations and follow-ups from the position. The focus will be on understanding control first, then building attacking options from there.
Gi Mixed with Christopher Macken: Chris will be looking at butterfly guard. Expect lots of details around the position along with some sneaky tips and concepts that make the position much more effective.
Judo with Caveman: Justin will be away for the next two weeks, so Caveman will be stepping in. Expect explosive action, chained attacks and lots of movement in these sessions.
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet: This week we’ll be looking at sprawling and general shot defence, focusing on reactions, positioning and how to stay safe when someone attacks your legs.
Muay Thai with Michael: Reminder that Muay Thai has now taken the place of Monday Judo, so there will be a class tonight at 19:30, as well as the Saturday class at 10:15.
Come down, throw some hands, learn something new and get seriously fit while doing it.
Teens with Ryan and Hugo: The teens will continue working from half guard, focusing on the dogfight position and the different options and transitions available from there.
Hero HQ & Combat HQ: This week the kids will be working on guard retention and control games, including how to chase and control the back when your partner turns away.
Please note that I won’t be around for the kids classes this week, but Hugo will be leading the sessions alongside our usual coaching team.
New Classes Reminder
Don’t forget to come and try some of the newer additions to the timetable:
Muay Thai with Michael
Mondays at 19:30 and Saturdays at 10:15. Great sessions for fitness, coordination, striking fundamentals and pushing your cardio in a completely different way.
Cardio for BJJ
Sundays at 11:00. A fun way to improve your gas tank using BJJ-specific movement and speed drills, followed immediately by...
Sunday Open Mat
11:30 – 13:00. Get some extra technique work, drilling or rounds in before enjoying the rest of your Sunday guilt free.
Late Gi Classes with Hugo
Tuesdays and Thursdays at 19:45. Honestly, there’s lots of gold in these sessions and they’re definitely worth coming down for if you haven’t tried them yet.
Tip of the Week
Good defence creates good offence.
The better you become at staying safe, framing properly and surviving difficult positions, the more confident and relaxed your attacking becomes.
Don’t rush past the defensive side of Jiu Jitsu. That’s where a lot of real growth happens in your guard!
See you on the mats,
-Mouncif
