The App Is Live!-E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter

Updated: 6 days ago

Hi everyone,

What a great weekend at E17 BJJ. Sunday’s open mat turned into a bit of an impromptu BBQ, the mats were busy, we had plenty of visitors and the vibes were excellent. Exactly what Summer of Rolls is supposed to be about!

Remember, our open mats are free for visitors from other gyms throughout August, so keep inviting your friends and training partners down. Come for some different rounds, stay to drill, meet some new people and enjoy the community around the mats.

We've got quite a bit happening again this week, so here we go!

Lumo Is Ready!

Hi everyone 👋

E17 BJJ has its own app now - members only, just for

people training with us. From your phone you can:

* See the timetable and book classes

* Check in when you arrive

* Track your belt and attendance

* Book private lessons

* Message the gym

* See your training insights

Two minutes to set up 👇

1️⃣ SET UP YOUR ACCOUNT

Enter the email address the gym has for you and

we'll send you a link to choose a password.

⚠️ It must be the email you gave us when you joined.

Because it's members only, the app checks your email

against our member list — a different address won't

be recognised.

2️⃣ ADD IT TO YOUR HOME SCREEN

Once your password is set, open the site again and:

📱 iPhone — in Safari, tap the Share button (the

square with the arrow), scroll down, tap

"Add to Home Screen"

🤖 Android — in Chrome, tap the ⋮ menu, then

"Install app" or "Add to Home screen"

It'll sit on your phone like a normal app.

Not on the list or changed your email? Message me

and I'll add you

New Wednesday Muay Thai

A reminder that our brand new Wednesday Muay Thai class with Kai is now on the timetable!

This brings our Muay Thai offering up to three sessions every week, giving you even more opportunities to add some striking into your training.

Monday: 19:30 to 20:45

Wednesday: 19:30 to 20:45

Saturday: 10:15 to 11:15

If you'd like to train more frequently and need to upgrade your membership to access more classes, just get in touch and we'll help you out.

Summer of Rolls Continues

We're well into August now, but there's still plenty of time to take advantage of Summer of Rolls.

As well as free open mats for visitors from other academies, don't forget about our £75 member referral reward.

Recommend someone to E17 BJJ during August and, if they join on a full membership, you'll receive a £75 voucher to spend in the E17 shop.

If they're completely new to BJJ, they can start with our Intro Course first. If they join as a full member within a month of finishing, you'll still receive your voucher.

New Gi? Rashguard? A couple of E17 tees? It's up to you!

And for non-members, our giveaway for three pairs of one-month Unlimited memberships is still running too.

Ryan Nee Crucifix Seminar

Saturday 5th September

Next up on our seminar calendar is Ryan Nee and his Crucifix System.

Ryan will be breaking down the system he uses himself, including entries, positional control and finishes, and showing how the different pieces connect together.

He's also been successfully applying the system at the highest level of competition, including during his recent run to the podium at the IBJJF World Championships in Long Beach.

Whether the crucifix is already part of your game or it's somewhere you almost never find yourself, this is a chance to add a very effective and often underused position to your arsenal.

Please Welcome the Newest Member of the E17 Team...

The fridge.

After a highly competitive recruitment process, it has earned its place at E17 BJJ and is now fully stocked and ready for action.

We've now got cold drinks available to purchase directly from the gym, perfect for grabbing something after training or when you've forgotten to bring something with you.

Have a look next time you're in and help keep our newest team member busy.

This Week's Focus

This will actually be the last week that we include the full breakdown of every class in the newsletter.

Don't worry, we're not keeping the week's training a secret!

Going forward, each coach will add their class focus directly into Lumo, meaning you'll be able to open the app and see exactly what's being taught in every session before you book.

It should make it much easier to plan your week, follow topics you're particularly interested in and make the most of the huge variety of classes on our timetable.

For one final time, here's what we've got coming up this week:

Gi Fundamentals with Mouncif (Monday & Wednesday)

This week we'll be moving away from particular positions and instead looking at some specific situations in sparring!

We'll look at sharing ideas that may help each other!

No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)

Tuesday will continue looking at front headlock defence, developing your ability to stay safe and work your way out when someone establishes control over your head and upper body.

Thursday marks the beginning of a new Closed Guard programme, starting to build the position from the ground up before developing more attacks and options over the coming sessions.

Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)

You'll be working from half guard, but with a particular focus on using it to transition into other guards.

Rather than thinking about each guard as a completely separate position, you'll start looking at how we can move between them depending on the reactions and opportunities our partner gives us.

Gi / No Gi with Christopher Macken (Friday)

Chris will be looking at mount escapes this week.

As always, Friday is open to both Gi and No Gi students, so turn up however you prefer to train and expect plenty of useful details around surviving and escaping one of the strongest positions in BJJ.

Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet

A new direction for the Wrestling for BJJ sessions this week as you begin looking at wrestling from the knees and wrestle-ups.

You'll start exploring how wrestling concepts can be applied once the exchange has already reached the ground and how we can use them to get back to our feet or turn bottom positions into attacking opportunities.

Teens with Ryan & Hugo

This week's focus will be underhooks, learning why they're such an important form of control and how they can help us improve position and create attacking opportunities.

E17 BJJ Youth Programme

Our primary-age students are moving onto some new material this week!

We'll be looking at ways to pass the guard, understanding how to get around our partner's legs and establish a stronger position.

We'll also be introducing some new takedowns, continuing to develop everyone's confidence getting safely from standing to the ground.

Tip of the Week

Not Every Round Needs to Be a War

Hard rounds are important, but they shouldn't be the only way you know how to train.

Some rounds can be about experimenting. Some can be about movement. Some can be about deliberately putting yourself into positions you're trying to improve.

If every roll becomes a battle to win at all costs, you'll naturally fall back onto the things you're already good at.

Change the pace sometimes. Give yourself room to try something new, make mistakes and actually think about what's happening.

There's a time to turn the intensity up, but there's also a lot of progress hiding in the rounds where you turn it down.

See you on the mats!
