Hi everyone,
I am back for a few weeks and looking forward to seeing everyone on the mats
We've had a great start to Summer of Rolls, with quite a few people from other gyms already coming down to train with us.
Make sure you take advantage of the open mats throughout August. They're a great opportunity to test your skills against some different people and styles, but remember that open mats aren't just about rolling. Use the time to drill, troubleshoot positions, ask questions, work on things you've been struggling with, or just spend some time with your teammates.
They're also a great way to meet people from across the wider BJJ community and build some new connections. Come down, train, help each other improve and enjoy the mats.
The E17 BJJ app rollout is also officially underway!
We'll gradually be inviting everyone across over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for your invite. Soon you'll be able to book and check into classes, see exactly what's being taught, keep your own training notes and track your training all in one place.
More Muay Thai From This Week
Our brand new Wednesday Muay Thai class with Kai starts this week on 12th August, bringing our striking offering up to three sessions every week
.
Monday: 19:30 to 20:45
Wednesday: 19:30 to 20:45
Saturday: 10:15 to 11:15
If you're enjoying Muay Thai and would like to train more frequently, reach out to us and we can help move your membership onto a higher plan so you can take advantage of more of the timetable.
Summer of Rolls
Our Summer of Rolls promotion continues throughout August!
Our open mats are completely free for visitors from other academies throughout the month. If you've got friends who train elsewhere, invite them down for some rounds, drilling and a chance to experience E17.

Want to earn a £75 E17 voucher?
Recommend a friend to the gym during August and, if they sign up for a full membership, you'll receive a £75 in-store voucher.
If they're brand new, they can join one of our Intro Course packages first. If they then become a full member within a month of finishing, you'll still receive your voucher.
Use it towards a new Gi, rashguard, E17 t-shirts or whatever else takes your fancy from the shop.
So if you've got someone you've been telling for months that they need to try BJJ, now's the time to finally get them through the door!
And for non-members, we're also giving away three pairs of one-month Unlimited memberships. Check out our Summer of Rolls post on Instagram for details on how to enter.
Parent & Child BJJ Experience
Saturday 22nd August

Have a son or daughter you've been wanting to get into training?
Have a child who already trains and has been trying to get you onto the mats?
Have a niece or nephew you've been telling about BJJ?
On Saturday 22nd August, we're hosting a special Parent & Child BJJ Experience at E17 BJJ.
It doesn't matter who has the experience. You can both be completely new, your child might already train, or you might be the grappler trying to convince them to give it a go.
It's a chance to learn together, have some fun and share the mats for a session.
£15 per pair.
Rip & Roll Morocco | 23rd to 28th November

Our next Rip & Roll camp is getting closer, and places are going quickly this time around!
We'll be heading back to Anza, Morocco for six days and five nights, bringing together BJJ, surfing, great food and plenty of time to relax with an amazing group of people.
This camp includes eight BJJ seminars across Gi and No Gi with four different instructors, including a female coaches, giving you the chance to learn from a really varied coaching team throughout the week.
Alongside all the Jiu Jitsu, you'll get surf coaching with video analysis, daily yoga and meditation, beach open mats, a sandboarding trip to the mini Sahara, breakfast and three-course dinners, BJJ laundry, airport transfers, plus plenty more throughout the week.
It's a camp, but it's also a holiday. Nothing is compulsory, so do as much or as little as you want.
E17 BJJ members also receive an exclusive discount, so if you've been thinking about joining us, come and speak to me or send me a message and I'll give you the details.
We've already got a great group coming in November and would love to see some more E17 faces joining us in Morocco!
Ryan Nee Crucifix Seminar
Saturday 5th September
Our next seminar is with Ryan Nee, who'll be taking you through his crucifix system.
Expect entries, control details, transitions and finishes from a position that doesn't get anywhere near as much attention as it deserves.
Ryan has been using this system successfully at the highest level, including during his recent run to the podium at the IBJJF World Championships, so this is an opportunity to learn something he has properly pressure-tested in competition.
AGC Friendly Competition
Saturday 12th September
Thinking about competing but not quite ready to throw yourself into the deep end?
AGC is a friendly competition and a great opportunity for a softer introduction to competing. You can experience preparing for an event, stepping onto the competition mats and testing your Jiu Jitsu without some of the atmosphere and pressure that can come with larger tournaments.
Even better, Juan is one of the organisers, so you'll have a familiar E17 face nearby on the day.
If you've been considering your first competition, this could be a great place to start.
Speak to Juan in class if you have any questions.
What's Coming Up?

This Week's Focus
Gi Fundamentals with Ryan (Monday & Wednesday)
This week you'll be introduced to a guard that quite a few of you may not have encountered before: K Guard.
K Guard is a modern attacking guard that allows you to get underneath your partner and control their lower body, creating opportunities to off-balance them, sweep, attack the legs or transition into other positions.
This week will be about getting familiar with the position, understanding what we're trying to achieve from it and beginning to build some options from there.
No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)
Tuesday means more shooting, this time with a specific focus on sweep single variations and chains. You'll work on connecting your attacks so that if the first option doesn't work, you've already got somewhere else to go.
Thursday will head back to front headlock defence, looking at how to keep yourself safe and work your way out when your opponent manages to establish control.
Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)
Tuesday will focus on half guard, developing your understanding and options from the position.
On Thursday you'll begin looking at how we can set up different variations of lower body guards, understanding how we enter them rather than simply starting from an already established position.
Intro to BJJ with Juan
This week we'll be looking at guards and sweeps, along with some of the basic principles behind them.
You'll start understanding why we use our legs to control someone when we're on our back, how we can disrupt their balance and how being underneath someone doesn't necessarily mean we're losing.
Gi / No Gi with Ryan (Friday)
Christopher Macken is away this week, so Ryan will be stepping in for Friday's Gi / No Gi session.
You'll continue looking at K Guard, this time exploring the position in both Gi and No Gi and seeing how the concepts can be applied regardless of how you prefer to train.
As always, come in a Gi or without one. Both are welcome.
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet
It's the final week of the single leg series.
Or, in the words of Memzinio, "The Season Finale."
You'll bring together the different single leg entries, finishes and options you've been developing over the last few weeks and get more opportunities to put them into practice.
Hero HQ & Combat HQ
It's time to see what everyone remembers!
We'll be testing the kids on the techniques, positions and concepts they've been learning throughout the term, giving everyone a chance to show how much they've progressed before we move onto our next topic.
Tip of the Week
Your Best Training Partner
The best training partner you have is the one standing in front of you. Not because they're necessarily the most skilled, strongest or most experienced, but because they're giving you a different problem to solve.
Someone bigger teaches you something different to someone smaller. A brand-new white belt gives you different reactions to an experienced grappler. Someone fast, strong, flexible or awkward all presents a different puzzle.
Try not to fall into the habit of only seeking out the people you enjoy rolling with most.
Every person on the mat has something they can teach you, and you have something you can give back to them too.
Treat every partner as an opportunity to improve and you'll rarely waste a round.
See you on the mats!
