Hey team,
This week marks six months since E17 BJJ opened its doors, and what a journey it’s been! Thank you to everyone who’s been a part of this growing community — whether you joined us on day one or just recently stepped on the mats; It’s been an honour to build this with you all.
Congratulations to anyone who graded last week and also a thank you to everyone who came down to Monday’s grading and stuck around for drinks after. It was great to celebrate everyone’s progress and get to know each other a bit more off the mats.
This Week's Techniques
Fundamentals – Escaping Bottom Side Control
Last week, we focused on pinning and controlling from top side control. This week, we flip the script and explore how to escape from the bottom.
We'll be working on core concepts like framing, creating space, and timing your hip escape.
This is one of the most important areas for beginners, so don’t worry if it takes a few reps to click — stick with it.
Fundamentals Plus – Top Side Control
This week we will be continuing the work from our Fundamentals classes last week but looking at some more submission and transition options for when we pass our partners guard and find ourselves in top side control!
Next Community Event – BBQ at the Gym!
Mark your calendars, Sunday 3rd August — we’re throwing a BBQ at E17 BJJ 🎉
Expect good food, chilled tunes, and a bit of sun (fingers crossed). Whether you train five times a week or just pop in now and then, this is a great chance to hang out, bring a partner, and enjoy the community we’ve all helped build. We’ll kick things off in the early afternoon — more details soon!
BJJ Tip of the Week:
No Frames, No Escape
Your arms aren’t there to push — they’re there to frame. Get them in place before your opponent settles the position.
Often we have to fight for the space to get these frames in but early frames give you the structure and space you need to move easier.

Thanks again for making E17 BJJ what it is. Here's to the next six months and beyond.
See you on the mats,
Mouncif
