De La Riva & Chill (Where's the sun gone?) Monday 5th May 2025 - E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter

Hey team,

We’re back with another week of training — and what better way to beat the cold than getting warm on the mats?

Open Today – Bank Holiday Training!

Just a reminder that we are open today, even though it’s a Bank Holiday. Come shake off the long weekend and get some rounds in.

This Week’s Technique: De La Riva Guard

We’re moving into the De La Riva guard this week — a dynamic, mid-range position that ties in beautifully with last week’s collar-sleeve supine work. Whether you're new to open guard or looking to refine your entries and sweeps, there’s something here for everyone.

New! Fundamentals-Plus Classes

We're excited to launch our Fundamentals-Plus classes this week! These classes run 7:15pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, right after the standard Fundamentals classes. They're perfect if you finish work later, want a slightly tougher session, or want to challenge yourself to doing a double class!

Fundamentals-Plus classes will include:

  • More sparring, more intensity

  • Different weekly topics

  • Great for bridging the gap before we launch some more advanced classes later on in the year.

With this, we're now running five classes a week - thanks to your continued support and enthusiasm!

Permanent Space - Coming Soon?

We're still on the hun for a permanent home for E17 BJJ and we're hoping to have some exciting news in the next few weeks. Watch this space - big things are coming.

BJJ Tip Of The Week - Posture and Base

When passing the guard, keep a strong posture Don't dive forward into them! A solid base beats frantic speed and you will find that you have time to assess the situation before deciding how to proceed.

What is posture?

Posture is how you hold your body, especially your spine, shoulders and head in a strong and balanced way. Good posture makes you harder to sweep, submit or control. For example, when you are in someone's Closed Guard, sitting upright with your back straight, head up and elbows tight is good posture, slouching forward or looking down too much breaks your posture and can get you into trouble! In open guard, being in a good deadlift pose can help, remembering your elbow knee connection!

Think of posture as your defensive shape. the stronger the shape, the safer you are.

Bring A Friend - Free Trials Available

Know someone who's been curious about trying Jiu Jitsu? Bring them along for a free trial session. The more our community grows, the more classes and events we can offer!

We also offer children's classes through Ninja School on Wednesdays and Fridays, if you have any little ones, nieces or nephews, please enquire about a free trial for them to get involved too.

Thanks as always for being part of the E17 BJJ family - we're growing strong every week, and it's all down to you.

See you on the mats,

-Mouncif
