E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter - 13/04/2026

Updated: Apr 14

Hey everyone,

I’m away again this week for Rip & Roll camp in Morocco, this time with a few of the E17 crew out there as well. Really nice to see some of you getting involved and experiencing it.

Back on the mats with you all very soon.

Ryan will be covering my Monday and Wednesday Gi classes this week, so you’re in good hands.

Community Event Reminder

Don’t forget our upcoming E17 BJJ Movie Night on Saturday 25th April.

We’ll be watching Choke, the classic documentary featuring Rickson Gracie — a great insight into his mindset, approach to Jiu Jitsu, and what made him so dominant.

Bring a pillow, some snacks, and come down for a relaxed evening together. Full details will be in next week’s newsletter.

NEW Gi Classes Reminder

Don’t forget about the new late Gi classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, led by Ryan and Hugo.

These run from 19:45 to 21:00 and are a great option if you finish work later or just want to get some extra training in during the week.

This Week’s Focus

Gi Fundamentals with Ryan (Monday & Wednesday) - Continuing on from our escapes work, you’ll now be looking at X guard. The focus will be on entries into the position, how to control it properly, and building a strong understanding of how it works.

Gi Fundamentals with Hugo and Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday) - We’ll be continuing to work on back attacks, focusing on collar chokes, triangles and armlocks, and how these submissions connect with each other. The emphasis will be on understanding the interplay between them, so you can transition smoothly depending on your partner’s reactions rather than forcing a single option.

No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo and Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday) - You’ll be working on inside passing, focusing on how to open the closed guard, control the inside space, and work through over-under style passing. A really solid, pressure-based approach to getting through the guard.

Gi Mixed with Christopher Macken (Friday) - You will look conceptually at guard passing, reactions and things to look for

Judo with Justin - This week’s focus is Harai Goshi. We’ll look at timing, hip placement and how to use your body properly to generate the throw, focusing on smooth execution rather than force.

Teens No Gi with Ryan and Hugo - You’ll be working on X guard, focusing on control, understanding the position, and how to use it to set up effective sweeps.

Tip of the Week

Train with intention.

It’s easy to just show up and roll, but try going into each session with one thing you want to improve. A position, a grip, a transition.

Even small focus points add up over time and make your training much more productive.

See you all soon,

-Mouncif
