Hey team,
Another solid week of training ahead. The room is building nicely, people are improving week by week, and it’s great to see the consistency across the board. Let’s keep that going.

Community Event – Movie Night
Our next E17 BJJ community event is locked in:
Saturday 25th April
We’ll be hosting a movie night at the gym, so bring a pillow, some snacks, some popcorn, and come settle in for a relaxed evening together with a wicked projector
We’ll be watching Choke, the classic BJJ documentary featuring Rickson Gracie. It follows Rickson during the Vale Tudo Japan tournament and gives a great insight into his mindset, approach to Jiu Jitsu, and what made him so dominant. It’s a brilliant watch whether you’re new to the sport or have been training for years.
More details to follow, but for now, get the date in your calendar.
This Week’s Focus
Gi Fundamentals with Mouncif: We’ll be working on back mount escapes, focusing on clearing hooks, controlling the hands, and working your way back to safety. The emphasis will be on staying calm under pressure and dealing with one problem at a time.
No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo and Ryan: We’ll be looking at closed guard, focusing on posture control and off-balancing your partner, leading into overhook-based attacks. Understanding how to break posture and control movement is key to making your guard effective.
Judo with Justin: This week’s focus is Seoi Otoshi, a drop-style shoulder throw. We’ll work on timing, positioning and balance breaking, making sure the technique feels controlled and efficient rather than rushed.
Gi Mixed with Christopher Macken: Chris will be leading the session with a concept-led approach, topic of which is to be decided - but look forward to an engaging class as per usual
Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet: We’ll be working on double legs and single leg finishes, focusing on clean entries, strong positioning, and how to finish efficiently once you’ve committed to the shot.
Teens No Gi with Ryan and Hugo: We’ll be looking at mount attacks, including the armbar and americana, and helping connect those attacks together once a strong position is established.
Easter Weekend Schedule
The gym will be running on a normal schedule over the Easter bank holiday weekend, so no changes to your usual training times:
Friday - normal classes
Saturday - normal classes
Sunday - closed (as usual for now)
Monday - normal classes
Plenty of opportunities to get your training in over the long weekend!
Tip of the Week - The first reaction matters most.
When something happens in a round, your first reaction often determines what comes next.
If you get put in a bad position, stay calm. If you feel pressure, frame first. If you lose balance, stabilise before attacking.
Good Jiu Jitsu is built on good first reactions. Train yourself to respond properly, not just quickly.
Looking forward to another good week on the mats and seeing you all continue to improve.
See you on the mats,
-Mouncif
