Judo Time! - E17 BJJ Newsletter 06/10/2025

Great to see so many of you on the mats last week! The energy has been amazing, and it’s always inspiring to watch people put in the work and grow together. Let’s keep that momentum rolling into another week of training.

Schedule Note

I’ll be away on Monday, but Emmanuel will be covering class — you’ll be in great hands as always! I’ll be back teaching on Tuesday.

Judo Classes Launch This Week

Justin has travelled the world to collect his wealth of knowledge!
Justin has travelled the world to collect his wealth of knowledge!

Join us on Wednesdays & Fridays, 19:15–20:30 to learn Judo with Justin Goh!

Justin has over 20 years of Judo experience and is a fantastic instructor. These sessions are open to all levels, and are an amazing opportunity to sharpen your stand-up skills for BJJ. Don’t miss them!

This Week’s Focus

Gi Fundamentals - Building on last week’s triangle and armbar work, we’ll be exploring the Omoplata. More than just a submission, it’s also a powerful tool for control, sweeps, and transitions.

No-Gi Fundamentals - We will continue our work on sit up guard, working from Single Leg X and learning to transition to X Guard before looking at some sweeps that are available to us from there to give you even more options.

.

Judo - We’ll start with Ukemi (breakfalls) to make sure everyone knows how to fall safely — one of the biggest lifelong benefits of Judo. Then we’ll look at Ashi Waza (foot sweeps), which are like the jab of grappling: simple, sharp, and effective.

Upcoming Events

Next Social – Sauna & Cold Plunge - Saturday, 25th October. After No-Gi (finishes 11am) → Walthamstow Community Sauna, 12pm slot (1.5 hours sauna + plunge) - The community sauna is mixed gendered!

Spots for the sauna at prime times like this always sell out early, so grab yours ASAP if you are interested!

Afterwards, we’ll grab a coffee/lunch nearby. Always a great vibe, let’s get as many of us down as possible!

🎃 Halloween BJJ – Friday, 31st October

Bring out the masks, capes, wings, or whatever spooky gear you’ve got for a Halloween-themed roll. A little chaos, a lot of fun — get your outfits ready for a spooky smesh!

Tip of the Week

The Omoplata isn’t just a submission — think of it as a position. Once you get there, you have options: submit, sweep, transition to mount, or use it to reset control. Approach it as a hub rather than a single move, and it can become one of the most versatile tools in your game.

Mindset of the Week

Consistency beats intensity. You don’t need to smash every session — just keep showing up. Each class adds another brick to your foundation, and before long you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come.

See you on the mats!
