Legs This Way, Please | E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter 13/01/26

Hey team,

It finally feels like we’re moving into a slightly warmer week, and the mats were absolutely packed last week with that New Year energy. It’s been great to see so many familiar faces alongside new ones, and the progress really showed as we worked through the knee slice pass. Lots of small details clicking into place — exactly what we want to see.

Let’s keep that momentum going.

The 1 year anniversary class!
The 1 year anniversary class!

This Week’s Focus

Gi Fundamentals — with Mouncif & Juan

This week we’ll continue working on passing the guard, focusing on the leg drag pass. We’ll look at how to create the angle, control the legs, and enter the position safely, as well as common ways to transition into the leg drag from other passing attempts. A really effective, high-percentage pass to add to your game.

No-Gi Fundamentals — with Chris & Mouncif

We’re continuing our work from closed guard, focusing on the overhook to triangle, and the strong connection between the kimura and the hip bump sweep. The goal is understanding how these attacks link together and how to use one reaction to open up the next option.

Judo — with Justin

This week’s Judo focus is Tsuri Komi Goshi. We’ll look at lifting and pulling mechanics, correct hip placement, and timing — using your arms to break balance before rotating in. A great throw for developing smooth entries and strong control straight into BJJ.

Wrestling for BJJ (Saturday) — with Mehmet

This week Mehmet will be focusing on stance work and shot set-ups, looking at how to move efficiently, create reactions, and enter safely. We’ll also explore some takedown options from the knees, giving you practical ways to wrestle and attack without overcommitting — especially useful for BJJ-specific scenarios

Friday Training - Let’s Pack the Mats

This Friday, we’ll have a camera crew in to capture some content for upcoming E17 BJJ advertisements. It would be amazing to have as many of you on the mats as possible to show what the gym is really about: good energy, full rooms, and people enjoying their training together.

No pressure to be “on show”, just come train as you normally would. The more of us there, the better it reflects the community we’re building here. If you can make it, it would be hugely appreciated!

Merch Reminder

We’ve still got E17 BJJ jumpers and rashguards available:

  • Jumpers — £30 (very warm, perfect for winter)

  • Rashguards — £26 - I got the price wrong last week! (great quality and excellent value, ideal for No-Gi or under the Gi)

Grab me before or after class if you’d like one.

Tip of the Week - Focus on one thing per session

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Pick one detail - a grip, a position, a transition - and give it your full attention for the session. Small focus leads to big improvement over

If you’re enjoying training and settling into a routine, January is a great time to invite a friend or family member to try a class. A lot of people are looking for something new this time of year, and a friendly face on the mats makes all the difference. Just message me and we’ll get them booked in for a free trial.

See you on the mats this week!

— Mouncif,

E17 BJJ
