Summer of Fun - E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter 03/08/2026

Hi everyone,

Hope you've all had a great week. We've got a big newsletter today, so buckle up!

The app beta testing has gone really well over the last week, and after today's final round of testing we'll begin rolling it out to the rest of the team.

There are still a few small bugs to iron out, but for the most part it's looking fantastic and we're really excited for you all to start using it. Being able to see exactly what's being taught in each class, book sessions, check in with your phone, keep training notes and monitor your own progress is going to be a huge step forward for the academy.

Thank you to everyone who's been helping us test it so far.

Ryan Nee Crucifix Seminar

Saturday 5th September

A huge thank you to everyone who attended Christopher Macken's seminar over the weekend. It was another brilliant afternoon with loads of great details and plenty of new ideas to take away.

Next up is Ryan Nee's Crucifix Seminar.

Gonna be another great one for your games!
Gonna be another great one for your games!

Ryan will be taking you through his infamous crucifix system, covering entries into the position, control concepts and a range of high-percentage finishes from one of the most underused positions in Jiu Jitsu.

If you've watched Ryan compete recently, you'll know just how effective this system is. He recently used it on his way to the podium at the IBJJF World Championships in Long Beach, California.

Whether you're completely new to the crucifix or already use it, there's something here for everyone.

More Muay Thai!

Due to the fantastic response to our striking programme, we're delighted to be adding another Muay Thai class to the timetable.

From next week we'll now have three Muay Thai sessions every week.

Mondays: 19:30 - 20:45

Wednesdays: 19:30 - 20:45

Saturdays: 10:15 - 11:15

The new Wednesday class will run immediately after the evening BJJ sessions, making it easy to stay for both if you'd like to.

If you're currently training BJJ or Muay Thai and would like to upgrade your membership to access more classes, simply send us an email at info@e17bjj.co.uk and we'll happily help you through the process.

This Week's Focus

Gi Fundamentals with Ryan (Monday & Wednesday)

This week you'll continue developing your guard passing, focusing on Spider Guard and Spider Lasso passing.

You'll also begin looking at pulling guard from collar and sleeve grips, before recapping the takedowns you've worked on over the last few weeks and connecting your standing game with your guard.

Intro to BJJ with Juan

This week's Intro classes will focus on takedowns and how we can immediately transition into effective guard passing sequences once we've brought our opponent to the floor.

Learning how the standing and ground games connect together is an important part of building a complete foundation.

Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)

You'll be looking at Butterfly Guard, beginning with pathways to the back before progressing into submission sequences later in the week.

As always, expect lots of options that naturally connect together depending on your partner's reactions.

No Gi Fundamentals with Hugo & Ryan (Tuesday & Thursday)

Tuesday is all about the standing overhook, learning how to stay safe while using the position to counter your opponent or launch your own attacks.

Thursday will focus on setting up shots, creating good entries and developing confidence taking your opponent down without exposing yourself unnecessarily.

Gi / No Gi with Christopher Macken (Friday)

Chris will be looking at front headlocks, one of the strongest controlling positions in grappling.

Expect plenty of details on maintaining control, preventing escapes and linking together different attacking opportunities as your opponent reacts.

Wrestling for BJJ with Mehmet

You'll continue developing your wrestling by working on transitions into the double leg from standing, alongside further development of your single leg attacks from the knees.

These classes continue to be one of the best places to improve your confidence on the feet.

Teens with Ryan & Hugo

The teens will continue building their stand-up game, looking at Osoto Gari and knee taps.

Classes may be a little quieter over the summer holidays, but that also means more individual coaching and plenty of extra mat time for everyone who attends.

Hero HQ & Combat HQ

This week our younger students will complete the final week of their stand-up block by reviewing their single leg finishes.

They've also now reviewed all of their escape positions, including an additional lesson on back escapes, putting them in a great position ahead of next week's grading.

Tip of the Week

Be Hard To Beat Before You Become Hard To Stop

Everyone loves learning new submissions and flashy attacks.

But before you become someone who's difficult to stop, first become someone who's difficult to beat.

Strong posture. Good frames. Reliable escapes. A guard that's frustrating to pass.

These are the foundations that give you the confidence to attack.

If your defence is solid, you'll spend less time surviving and far more time working your own game.

A great offence starts with a frustrating defence.

See you on the mats!
