Toreando Time! 02/06/2025 E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter

Hi team,

What a week! Huge thanks to all that came down for our open day - it was great to have Justin sharing his knowledge with us and energy high as always on the mats. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the professional pictures that were taken from the night!

This Week's Techniques -

Fundamentals - This week in Fundamentals, we'll be working on the Toreando Pass (Also known as the Bullfighter Pass)- a dynamic and accessible guard pass that gives beginners a solid blueprint for passing open guard. It teaches key principles of angles, posture, and pressure. If you have been struggling to pass someone's legs after the last 6 weeks of guard techniques, this will give you a reliable starting point.

Fundamentals Plus - We're wrapping up our series on Closed Guard escapes and the overhook attack system from the bottom. We will be looking at how the overhook can set up a plethora of attacks, making you ready to apply in in your sparring, plus a more sophisticated way to escape the closed guard.

Guest Instructor Next Week

We're excited to announce that Chris "Nightmare" Newman will be guest teaching all classes on week commencing Monday 9th June. Chris is a high level black belt competitor with an impressive list of achievements and a reputation for relentless attacks. Make sure to attend as many classes as you can so you don't miss your opportunity to learn from him

What's Coming up?

Wednesday June 18th - We will have a videographer with us, making a short movie about E17 BJJ, what we stand for too help raise out social media presence ahead of some big news for later in the year. It would be great to have as many people on the mats as possible, and if anyone was willing to answer a question or 2 on camera, that would be amazing too!

Monday 30th June - We're planning our next social for Monday 30th June - let's hit up the nearby pub for some food and have a couple of drinks together after training. Our last social had a great turn out and it was really nice to get to know everyone a bit better off that mats.

Tip Of The Week - Legs First

Beat the legs before you beat the guard!

One of the biggest mistakes people make when passing is trying to control the hips or head before they’ve cleared the legs. Think of passing the guard like climbing a ladder—you don’t jump to the top rung. You move in stages.

The legs are your opponent’s first line of defense. If you rush past them without proper control, you’ll often end up in a scramble or worse—trapped back in guard. Whether you’re using the Toreando pass or any other, focus first on neutralizing the legs. Control the distance, manage their frames, and create an angle. Once you're past the legs, then you can settle your weight, control the hips, and solidify the position.

I wish you all a great week!

See you on the mats-
