You Shall Not Pass Pt. 2 - E17 BJJ Weekly Newsletter 20/10/25

Hey team,

The weather may be miserable, but don’t let it get to you — last week the mats were absolutely packed, and it was great to see everyone showing up, training hard, and keeping the energy high. Let’s keep that momentum going this week 💪

This Week’s Focus

Gi Fundamentals - We’re continuing our work on guard retention — this time, focusing on how to use grips effectively to stop opponents from passing. Last week was all about staying calm and mobile without grips; now we’ll look at how to control and recover guard with them.

No-Gi Fundamentals - We’ll be breaking down mount escapes and how to transition into strong, offensive positions after recovering.

Judo - We’ll keep building on recent lessons while adding two key throws to the mix — Ko Soto Gari and Tsuri Komi Goshi.

Sauna & Cold Plunge

Join us this Saturday after training (12pm) at Walthamstow Community Sauna for a recovery session. These outdoor saunas are a great experience no matter the weather. You’ll need to pre-book your slot — link below — and please let me know if you’re coming so I can get a headcount!

There are only 10 slots remaining as I make this post, so book soon.

Halloween BJJ

Two weeks to go! Feel free to come to class wearing a mask or something fun — let’s keep training but have a laugh while we do it. No fear of being the only person dressed up as I already have mine!

Tip of the Week

“Guard retention starts before the pass.”

Don’t wait until your opponent is knee-sliding through to start defending. Recognise the signs early — control grips, adjust angles, and frame before they get close. Prevention beats reaction every time.

Merch Drop

We’re restocking jumper sizes soon! If you’d like one reserved, let me know — £30 each and they go fast.

Winter Grading

Monday 1st December — mark your calendars! Let’s get as many of you on the mats as possible to celebrate the progress and hard work from this year. Afterwards, we’ll head to the pub for food and drinks! Monday, while an odd day for something like this, allows us to get out of the gym at 7pm and enjoy some time so it doesn't end up too late!

See you on the mats!

— Mouncif,

E17 BJJ
